SAN DIEGO AUTO MUSEUM UPDATE!
As of 3/31/25 we will no longer have a space at the SDAM! The Museum needs to “keep things fresh” and so the “Corvair Corner” is being re-configured to show some of the Museum’s own restored “Hot Rods” for the near future….with one exception… Since the article in the Corsa Comunique had already gone to press, it was too late to retract some of the article’s text that invited all Corvair Convention visitors t travel to San Diego to see our exhibit … So, we will be moving Bob Parr’s ’63 Spyder in for the week of the Convention (Tues. 5/20 ~ Tues. 5/27) for Conventioneers to visit.
(This is the first time the National Convention, which attracts 100's of Corvair owners, has been on the West Coast, let alone in So. California, since 2008! We hope that this will draw dozens to spend their Memorial Day Weekend down the coast and hopefully through the SDAM!).
The SDAM has been GREAT to work with over the last 10 months and we should feel honored to have been able to show off several of our Corvairs to the world at this venue.
Thank You to the SDAM staff & voluteers who made this a truly unique activity and to all of our members who helped out and to ll of you who loaned your cars for this event!
Don’t forget that every 4th Tuesday of the month the SDAM is still FREE to all SD County residents. This month’s free Tuesday is 4/23. Come on down, enjoy the less crowded time of year at Balboa Park and see some beautiful cars.
PAST ACTIVITIES IN MARCH
Some members (Jim H., Ken B., Paul M. & Jon P.) got their Corvairs out of ‘Winter Hibernation’ and came on out with 12 of our members & wives on Sunday, March 23. We had a last minute change up. Instead of ‘cruising’ over to Hernandez’ Hideaway we met up at B. J.’s Brewhouse parking lot & ‘paraded’ over to Kit Carson Park for a surprise 70th. Birthday Pot Luck for past member Larry Tustison!
It was a fun time & good to see Larry & his wife, Lorrie (past pres. of SDCC). Their family put on a seemingly endless buffet of great foods (Sorry, Paul, no ‘Famous Hernadez’ Margaritas’…this trip!).
Beautiful day, good food & excellent camaraderie!
Let me know your thoughts and ideas or if you have a recommendation for future “Activities”!
THIS MONTH’S ACTIVITIES:
*** Saturday, April 12, 9:00 til 3:00, Grand Opening, ‘Details in Progress’ ***
detailing shop (the guys who did such a beautiful job on Kendra’s car!).
Owner, Prentice St. Clair, has scheduled a Grand Opening of his new shop featuring several industry experts in the fields of interior, exterior, paint, glass, engine, etc. detailing who will be conducting info-demonstrations & answering any/all questions about detailing (perfect timing to get your Corvairs ready for the One Day Avair & the National Convention!!). Goodies, prizes & a complimentary LUNCH (Phil’s BBQ) will also be provided.
He would love to have a few Corvairs in his parking lot for this event.
If you can be there with your Corvair please contact me (Al Toschi @ 209-601-5039 or rce26654@hotmail.com) ASAP to get on his schedule!
Check him & his services out (Click on this link): https://detailinprogress.com/
As always, we are quite fortunate that our San Diego area has quite a “Car Culture”!
In addition to our own SDCC “Activity”, take a moment to check out the websites for some of the local “automotive themed events” around the County. (Click on this link): https://www.sandiegoassociationofcarclubs.org/fulllistofevents
Of special interest this month is the Good Guy’s Car Show @ Del Mar Fairgrounds, Fri. 4/4 ~ Sun. 4/6 which is always a fun event. I especially enjoy the Autocross & this year they will have an Air Cooled Corral which should be fun to check out! (Click on this link): https://www.good-guys.com/dmn
UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:
See the new 2025 Activities Calendar for upcoming SDCC events that we would like to see more members participate in. We have a variety of special ‘Activities’ planned so mark your calendars and come on out and participate.
Later this summer the SDAM make their brand new IGNITE ACADEMY (which is an “innovative education program that equips underserved San Diego youth with technical skills, mentoring, and pathways to career success in the automotive industry and beyond.”) available to our SDCC & CCC to vist. This event will include a tour of their new facility in Santee, (8630 Argent St. Santee, near Gillespie Field), a quick cruise to a nearby restaurant (El Rancho?) for lunch. Stay tuned for this event coming as soon as the Academy is open to the public!
AND…Mark your Calendar & make your reservation ASAP for the 2025 Corvair Convention: May 20-23 (Tues-Fri) 2025 in San Luis Obispo, CA at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in San Luis Obispo. 2025 CORSA International Convention (corvair.org)
