Barrett Junction

I think of April as the start of spring here in SoCal, and with that, the start of Mother Nature shifting into
high gear.  The hillsides are flourishing with green, and flowers are starting to break through everywhere.
This brings the feelings of anxiousness to get that old Corvair out and take her for a drive.  I encourage you
to do that, and get her prepared to take a ride in the country with the whole gang.  April is the start of
summer activities such as the upcoming road rally that Karen and I are sponsoring.  The details are below, but
I’ll hit the highlights now.  The event will be the first annual Barrett Junction fish fry, and it will be on the 26th of April this year.  The plan is to meet at the Lemon Grove Ave. park-n- ride off highway 94 at 11am.  We will leave there promptly at 11:30 and meander through the winding countryside.  A lunch stop is planned at the Barrett junction Café, where lunch will be an all you can eat fish fry with rice and the café’s famous hush puppies.   From there, those that choose to will continue on east and enjoy the scenery of the Campo Indian Reservation.  Eventually, we will meet up with highway 8 in the Cleveland National Forest.  The jaunt back to San Diego will be along highway 8.  The trip to Barrett Junction is 50 miles round trip, and the entire loop through the Indian reservation is just under 100 miles.   There are seven folks already signed up, and we ask that you RSVP so we can arrange for the lunch ahead of time.

SDCC's Birthday

Saturday August 25, 2002 was a big day for the SDCC.  It was the clubs 29th birthday.  Jim and Carol
Stansbury had approx. 30 members and about 15 vairs up to there place in Escondido for a little
celebration, and there was a lot to celebrate.  Members brought there favorite food and Lew Richel
had the honors of cutting the birthday cake.  This day was also special for many members of the SDCC
who have been slaving several days a week for 14 months refurbishing a now beautiful 1963 Monza Spyder
Coupe.  This day was marked as a coming out party for the coupe we call "HotAire."  Our project
Co-Chairman Ralph Poore has spoken and he has declared the refurbishing "complete".  The coupe will
now reside at Jim and Carol Stansburies, till the Raffle at the GWFBT&SW November 8-10.  Jim and Carol
let us park our cars out front on the lawn where we were able to show them off and share more stories of
Corvair ownership.

"HOT AIRE" Raffle car

SDCC's Hot Aire project car is a '63 Monza Spyder coupe. Last fall, club members found the neglected car languishing in a carport in Solana Beach, north of San Diego, and bought it with the intent of restoring it and raffling it at the Great Western Fan Belt Toss & Swap Meet, a major Corvair event held annually in November in Palm Springs.

They hauled it to a workshop in Valley Center, and have since disassembled the car and its components. They rebuilt its turbocharged engine and refurbished its four-speed transmission and differential. Both front and rear suspensions were also rebuilt.

Meanwhile, the body was stripped of its old paint, and a few minor dents and dings smoothed out. There was almost no rust, as rt's an original California car, sold new in San Diego). By mid March it should be professionally painted in its original silver-blue hue outside and on appropriate interior panels. Other interior surfaces will be painted dark blue. Then new and refurbished interior panels and upholstery will be installed, and the car reassembled.

Parts were donated by many club members and others outside the club; vendors supplied parts at reduced rates. The car is being kept very close to stock, but improved in some respects. For instance, the original generator was replaced with a more modern alternator, and of course the wheels were powdercoated and now have radial tires.

Reassembly should be done by mid summer, and the car will be displayed at shows and cruise-ins in the area. Ralph Poore, in whose work shop the car and its parts reside, is co-chairing the Hot Aire project with Ken Schifftner.

The raffle was held at the GWFBT&SM's banquet on Nov. 9 in Palm Springs. Congrats to Jim for having the lucky ticket. SDCC sponsored the "Toss" this year, and the Hot Aire car is part of the overall effort going into the event. Only 500 tickets were sold at $20 each.
